HALL OF FAME HONOREES

Four members of the Worcester Academy Community will be inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame on Oct. 9, 2009 at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT.  Among them are Worcester Academy’s current athletic director and three Worcester Academy alumni.

The honorees include:

  • Charde Floyd ’03, Prep School Girl’s Players category
  • Dr. Ed Hjerpe III ’77, Scholar-Athlete category
  • Dick Stewart ’65, Prep School Boy’s Players category
  • Ed Reilly, Ronald S. Perry category

 The New England Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony is held every three years, and honors New England high school and college athletes, coaches, referees, organizations, and contributors to the game of basketball who have distinguished themselves in competition or in service to the game.

Previous New England Basketball Hall of Fame recipients have included Worcester Academy teams, as well as individual coaches and Worcester Academy alumni.

2009 HALL OF FAMERS

Charde Floyd will be honored in the Prep School Girl’s Players category. Ms. Floyd, after graduating from Worcester Academy in 2003, went on to graduate from Assumption College, where she was a captain of the Greyhounds basketball team. During her career at Assumption, Floyd scored over 1,000 points and had more than 1,000 rebounds before tearing her ACL late in her senior year.

Dr. Ed Hjerpe III will be honored in the Scholar-Athlete category, which honors distinguished individuals who had outstanding careers as players, who excelled in the classroom, and, following graduation, have been highly successful in their careers and have made strong contributions to society. Hjerpe, after graduating from Worcester Academy in 1977, completed his undergraduate education at St. Anselm College and received a Ph.D. from Notre Dame University. Currently, Hjerpe is the CEO of Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston.

Ed Reilly, director of athletics at Worcester Academy and head varsity boys basketball coach, will be honored in the Ronald S. Perry category, which honors individuals who have excelled in one or more of the following New England Basketball Hall of Fame categories: High School Player, High School Coach, College Player, College Coach, Referee, or Administrator/Contributor. Specifically, Reilly will be honored as an Outstanding New England High School and College Player and Coach.  A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross (1976) where he was assistant basketball coach from 1982 to 1989, Mr. Reilly has been a longtime coach at colleges and universities throughout the Northeast. He was head basketball coach at Bryant College from 1989 to 2001, and assistant at the universities of Princeton (1980 to 1982) and Brown (1978 to 1980).

Dick Stewart will be honored in the Prep School Boy’s Players category. Mr. Stewart, a member of the Class of 1965, captained his team under Coach “Dee” Rowe, whom he went on to assist when he coached at UConn. Stewart is currently the associate director of athletics at University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
